What is Deburring?
Deburring in CNC machining is the process of removing sharp edges, burrs, and imperfections from machined parts to improve their safety, functionality, and aesthetics. Burrs are raised edges or ridges that can form during the machining process due to the cutting or milling action. Removing burrs is essential, as they can pose safety hazards, affect the performance of the component, and interfere with the assembly process.
Deburring in CNC machining can be done through various methods, including manual deburring using handheld tools, vibratory deburring machines, tumbling processes, and automated deburring equipment. The choice of method depends on the specific part, the type of material, and the desired surface finish. Regardless of the method, deburring is a critical step in the manufacturing process to ensure that the final product meets safety, performance, and aesthetic standards.
Types of Burrs
- Poisson Burrs: These are formed when excessive material is pushed outward and upward during drilling, milling, or turning operations. They typically have a triangular or conical shape and are often sharp.
Rolled Burr: This type of burr is formed when material is pressed upward and outward, usually during the thread-rolling process. Rolled burrs tend to be smoother and less sharp than other types.
Tear Burr: Tear burrs result from shearing or cutting operations, where the material is deformed and separated along the cutting edge. These burrs can be irregular and jagged.
Breakout Burr: Breakout burrs occur in materials like composites, laminates, and plastics. When the cutting tool exits the material, it can cause a breakout burr, which resembles a flaked edge.
Edge Burrs: Edge burrs occur along the edges of a workpiece during processes like shearing or punching. They can be sharp and irregular, potentially posing safety hazards.
Sliver Burr: Sliver burrs are thin, elongated burrs that can result from various machining processes. They are usually narrow and can extend from the edges of a workpiece.
Micro Burr: These are extremely small burrs that may not always be visible to the naked eye. They can form during micro-machining or precision manufacturing processes and can affect the functionality of micro-components.
Cross-Drilled Burr: Cross-drilled burrs are produced during drilling operations, where a burr forms on the exit side of the hole. This type of burr can interfere with fastener insertion and weaken the material around the hole.
Undercut Burr: Undercut burrs are formed when the cutting tool digs below the intended surface, creating a recess or undercut. These burrs can be problematic in applications where a flush or level surface is required.
Split Burr: Split burrs occur when a workpiece cracks or splits along its edge, resulting in a raised burr. This can happen during cutting or machining of brittle materials.
